HCR2040 Designed to Weaken Workers’ Voices, Shows Arizona Needs Pro-Worker Leaders

Labor unions applaud court ruling striking down HCR2040, but warn that protecting working people requires leaders who respect workers and the services they provide

ARIZONA – Arizona labor unions, representing hundreds of thousands of Arizona workers, released the following joint statement in response to the Maricopa County Superior Court’s ruling declaring HCR2040 (Prop 143) unconstitutional:

“Yesterday's ruling is an important victory for Arizona workers, but it is not the end of this fight. HCR2040 was designed to weaken workers’ voices and make it harder for us to advocate for fair treatment, safe workplaces, and the communities we serve. The court was right to strike down this unconstitutional measure, but Arizona workers should not have to rely on the courts to defend rights that should never have been under attack in the first place.

Protecting workers’ rights requires electing leaders who respect working people, support public services, and understand that Arizona is stronger when educators, first responders and all public service workers have a meaningful voice in the decisions that affect our jobs, our families and our communities."

HCR2040 may have been stopped, but Arizona’s labor movement is united, and we will continue standing together and fighting for the rights, dignity and respect every worker deserves.”
