Arizona Workers to Jay Feely: Social Security is an Earned Right, Not a Ponzi Scheme

Arizona workers reject CD 1 congressional candidate Jay Feely’s views on Social Security, recently surfaced by the AZ Mirror. The outlet reported Feely’s previous support of privatizing Social Security, raising the retirement age, and his agreement with an op-ed that called Social Security a “Ponzi scheme”.

175,000 Arizonans in CD 1 receive Social Security. These are promised, earned benefits that working Arizonans pay into with every paycheck over the course of their careers. Unlike Feely, who owns five homes, many Americans live paycheck to paycheck and count on these benefits to pay their bills and retire with dignity. Privatization would put thousands of Americans’ benefits at the mercy of corporations in the stock market, while raising the retirement age would force millions of Americans to work longer, even after decades of physically demanding work.

“Older voters have a clear choice in the upcoming election. The Arizona Alliance has done the research and we know that Amish Shah can be trusted to fight to strengthen and protect the Social Security benefits Arizonans earn over a lifetime of hard work,” said Linda Somo, President of the Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans, a grassroots advocacy organization with more than 5,100 members in the district. “Jay Feeley called Social Security a ‘liability’ and a ‘Ponzi scheme.’ He’s not just wrong, he cannot be trusted to protect the benefits more than 175,000 of us in this district rely on.”

From now until November 3rd, Arizona union members across the state are knocking on doors and turning out the vote for pro-worker candidates like Amish Shah for CD 1, who has committed to put working families first and protect the Social Security benefits they’ve earned.
