Labor Movement Demands Immediate Representation for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District
The Arizona AFL-CIO and Pima Area Labor Federation shared a joint statement calling on Speaker Johnson to fulfill his duty and seat Congresswoman-elect Adelita Grijalva:
Twenty-three days ago, the people of Southern Arizona went to the polls and made their choice clear—electing Adelita Grijalva to represent them in Congress with nearly 69 percent of the vote and a decisive 40,000-vote margin.
While Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to seat Grijalva, more than 800,000 Southern Arizonans are left without a voice in Washington. Johnson’s inaction not only silences voters— it blocks families, workers, and small business owners from accessing essential constituent services, including help with Social Security and veterans’ benefits.
Southern Arizonans have done our part. We voted. We showed up for democracy. Now it’s time for Congress to do the same.
Congresswoman-elect Grijalva is ready to serve and do the job we elected her to do. On Tuesday, Governor Katie Hobbs, Attorney General Kris Mayes, and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes certified the election. Arizona’s labor movement demands that Speaker Johnson do his job and swear Grijalva in without any further delays.
